With BoxCryptor it is not only possible to easily encrypt Dropbox data but also other cloud services like Sugar Sync. In this tutorial I will show you how to manage your data from Sugar Sync on all your computers using BoxCryptor for encryption.

 

1. Create a Sugar Sync account or login to an existing one

First of all you should head to your account’s web interface and add your current computer to your account if not yet happened. This can be easily done by clicking on “Add a Device” in the files view. Now you can choose which platform to add. By choosing “Computer” you will be able to download the Sugar Sync Software. After downloading start setup and follow the instructions and type in your Sugar Sync account information.

2. Download and install BoxCryptor

If you haven’t yet downloaded BoxCryptor you can download the current version here: www.boxcryptor.com. After downloading run setup and follow the instructions.

3. Choose which folder to encrypt

Now you have several possibilities what to do:

a) You can encrypt your complete “Magic Briefcase”

b) You can encrypt only a subfolder or an other synced folder

c) You can encrypt a folder which you want to share with someone else or an other account

4. Setting up BoxCryptor

Run BoxCryptor. Now you can see a little padlock as tray icon. Right click on it and go to “Preferences”. Now you can choose which directory to encrypt:

a) If you want to encrypt your complete “Magic Briefcase” choose DocumentsMagic Briefcase.

b) If you want to encrypt only a subfolder of your Sugar Sync folders simply choose the folder you want to encrypt.

c) If you want to encrypt a folder you want to share just choose this folder.

Now set up your drive letter you want to use (it shouldn’t be in use yet). If you need advanced settings (e.g. deactivated filename encryption) check the “Advanced Mode” box. Click on ok. Now you can choose your personal password (Tip: If you checked “Advanced Mode” you can disable filename encryption here).

Important: Only empty folders will be encrypted completely. Existing files won’t be encrypted or displayed in your BoxCryptor drive.

5. Encrypt data

Now you can easily encrypt your files or folders by dragging them into your selected BoxCryptor drive. They will automatically be encrypted and synced to your Sugar Sync account.

6. Setting up your other computer

To sync your files to an other computer first repeat step 1 and 2 on this computer. Now your encrypted files will be synced to this computer.

7. Setting up BoxCryptor on the other computer

To decrypt your files just go to BoxCryptor preferences again and choose in case a) and b) the same folder which you chose to encrypt. Then type in your BoxCryptor password and your files will be decrypted.

8. Setting up BoxCryptor with a shared folder

If you have another account or you want to share a folder with someone else you can also decrypt shared folders. After you activated to share your folder with an other account go to the web interface of the account which got permission to your shared folder. You can see the link to “Shared Folders” on the left. By clicking on it you will see all shared folders of the account. Go to your shared folder and click on it. Now you see all encrypted files of this folder. To sync this folder to the computer and decrypt data click on “Sync to Computer”. Now go to the BoxCryptor preferences and choose the shared folder which can be found in DocumentsSugarSync Shared Folders*your-account-email**SharedBoxCryptorDirectory*. Now you just have to type in your BoxCryptor password to decrypt your shared files.
