Two new members joined the BoxCryptor team today: David & Alexander

We are very, very happy to announce two new members in our BoxCryptor team:

David just arrived today morning on his fancy longboard. He studies mathematics and philosophy at the university of Augsburg. He will support us in developing new key management system. In his off-line life he's father of two sweet children and a coffee geek. Besides this he's an outdoor guy, playing with anything that helps him going fast.

Our second new member is Alexander:

Alexander is currently doing his Master in Computer Science and Information Economics at the University of Augsburg. His main responsibility will be the iOS-App for your iPhone or iPad. So if your iOS app gets a real boost after the next update, he is the one to thank for.

When not sitting in front of the computer and coding new apps or other programs he loves to walk around with his camera or cooking with and for friends.

Securely use and encrypt Google Drive on your Android device (Beta)

One week after its launch, Google Drive seems to be a great cloud storage solution. But when using Google Drive, it is a great risk to the privacy and data security of your files - it's 'A toxic brew'.

After being able to encrypt your Google Drive with BoxCryptor for Windows, you can now also access your encrypted files in Google Drive on your Android device! We have just pushed a new version of BoxCryptor for Android to the Google Play Store which comes with support for Google Drive! Simply grant BoxCryptor for Android access to your Google Drive/Docs files by connecting it with Google Drive. Then you can access and store encrypted files in Google Drive just as you did before with Dropbox.

In order to support Google Drive, BoxCryptor for Android needs to request the new permission "Your accounts". This allows to retrieve your Google account information when - and only when - connecting to Google Drive. BoxCryptor for Android will not access this information at any other time. Also, please note that Google Drive support is in beta for the beginning. If you should encounter any problem, please contact us in the forums or submit a ticket.

PS: Of course, we also plan to support Google Drive on BoxCryptor for iOS as soon as possible.

Secure your Google Drive with BoxCryptor for Windows

Here it is: Google's long awaited online storage - Google Drive - has finally launched. For those of you who want to use Google Drive but care about adequate data security, BoxCryptor is the ideal solution. In this tutorial I will show you how you can easily encrypt your Google Drive synced files with BoxCryptor.

1. Create a Google account or login to an existing one

First of all you should create a new Google account or login to an existing one. Then you can download the Google Drive Software. After downloading, start the setup and follow the instructions.

(download)

2. Download and install BoxCryptor

If you haven't yet downloaded BoxCryptor you can get the current version from here: www.boxcryptor.com. After downloading start the setup and follow the instructions.

3. Setting up BoxCryptor

Run BoxCryptor. If you're running BoxCryptor for the first time, a wizard will help you to set up a new encrypted folder. Otherwise, right click the little padlock icon in the system tray, go to "Show BoxCryptor" and click on "Create new" to create a new encrypted folder. Choose the location of your Google Drive folder and a name for your encrypted folder (by default: "BoxCryptor"). On the next page select the drive letter of the BoxCryptor drive. Then you define a password for the encrypted files. Please make sure not to forget this password, as it cannot be resotred or resetted anymore! If you need advanced setting (e.g. deactivated filename encryption) you can now change this in the advanced mode.

(download)

4. Encrypt data

Once finished, it is very easy to encrypt your files and folders you want to sync with Google Drive. Just drag then into your BoxCryptor drive and they will automatically be encrypted and synced to the selected folder in your Google Drive account.

(download)

5. Setting up other computer

To decrypt your data on another computer install Google Drive. When Google Drive finished syncing, repeat step 1 and 2 on the other computer. Instead of creating a new encrypted folder, you have to open an existing encrypted folder. Select the same encrypted folder within your Google Drive which you have previously encrypted (e.g. Google Drive\BoxCryptor). After selecting the drive letter and finishing the Wizard, type in password you've chosen before and your files will appear decrypted in the BoxCryptor drive.

Have fun with Google Drive and BoxCryptor for Windows while we are working on integrating Google Drive in our iOS and Android apps!

BoxCryptor for Android v1.2 is here

Boris and the rest of our team worked hard the past days in order to bring you the latest update for BoxCryptor for Android and we have just released version 1.2 in Google Play Store! This is our first step in supporting additional storage providers additionally to Dropbox. For now, we have "only" added support to access encrypted folders on the sd card of your device, but we will soon also add support for additional cloud storage providers like Box.net!

Additionally, we have listened to your feedback about the newly required permission to read the phone state and identity. This permission is not required in the new version anymore in order to protect your privacy.

We'd be very happy if you'd rate BoxCryptor for Android in Google Play Store if you haven't done it already! Thanks for your support!

BoxCryptor for Android v1.2 has the following improvements:

  • Added: SD card support
Additionally to Dropbox, encrypted folders can also be located on the sd card. You can now use BoxCryptor with apps like DropSync or FolderSync or simply copy the encrypted folder manually to your Android device.

  • Added: Caching support
Encrypted files are now cached locally on the sd card. This means that already downloaded encrypted files are not re-downloaded if opened again. This applies only to encrypted files - plaintext files are always deleted directly after being used.

  • Added: App2SD support
The app can now be moved to sd card.

  • Modified: Read phone state and identity permission is not required anymore
Many users expressed concerns about their privacy because the device IMEI has been transmitted to our servers during the activation of a serial number. In order to address these concerns, we do not collect the IMEI anymore, but rather generate a "pseudo-unique" hardware id.

  • Modified: Upgraded to the latest Dropbox SDK

New versions of BoxCryptor for Windows and Android available!

We're excited to announce the release of new versions of BoxCryptor for Windows and BoxCryptor for Android here at the London Web Summit! As of today, BoxCryptor for Windows is now ready for download as version 1.3 which has the following improvements:

  • Improved stabitility (a few users experienced BSOD which has been resolved)
  • Improved speed up to 200% through AES hardware acceleration (up to 50MB/sec instead of 15MB/sec)
  • Improved compatibility with other programs (e.g. portable software)
  • Network/Internet access for portable programs executed on the BoxCryptor drive (Hello FirefoxPortable and others!)
  • Programs on the BoxCryptor drive can run as administrator
  • Windows Search support (the BoxCryptor drive can now be indexed by Windows search for a better search experience)
  • Windows File sharing support (folders in the BoxCryptor drive can now be shared over the network)

You can download BoxCryptor for Windows v1.3 here:

http://www.boxcryptor.com/download/BoxCryptor_v1.3_Setup.exe

In addition to the Windows version, we have also improved our Android app and BoxCryptor for Android is available as version 1.1 with the following improvements:

  • Edit support: BoxCryptor now detects if you changed a file after you opened it in BoxCryptor and automatically encrypts and uploads the changes to your Dropbox.
  • Create new folders: You can now create new folders in BoxCryptor for Android.
  • Create new encrypted folders: You can now also create new encrypted folders by specifying a name and password. Advanced options like filename encryption or key size are also available.
  • Download support: If you have a file manager app installed (currently supported ES FileExplorer and OI File Manager), you can download and decrypt (or export) a file to any location on your device.
  • Serial number support: Some users have not been able to purchase the BoxCryptor for Android Unlimited Key app, because their device is not support by Android Market/Play or because they're using a Custom ROM. The Unlimited features can now also be unlocked by entering a serial number which can be purchased on our website.
  • GUI improvements: The GUI has been adopted to the latest Android versions and guidelines

BoxCryptor for Android v1.1 is from now on available for download in Android Play (or Android Market).

UPDATE: We've received some messages why the new BoxCryptor for Android version requires the new permission "Read phone state and identity".

This new permission is required to read the IMEI of your device as part of the new serial number support. When you enter a serial number, the IMEI is read and sent to our servers as part of the activation process. This allows us to track on how many devices a serial number is used.

This operation is only performed when you're entering a serial number. Another operation which requires this permission is never performed.

BoxCryptor for Windows v1.2 available!

Hi everybody,

on schedule for the weekend, we're proud to announce the release of BoxCryptor for Windows Version v1.2!

We are especially happy to have implemented a long-wanted feature: multiple folder support. This was voted #1 from our users in our feedback forum!

Here's a list of the important improvements in BoxCryptor for Windows v1.2:

  • Support for multiple encrypted folders at once so you can have more than one encrypted folder (only available in the Unlimited version)
  • Advanced mode for modifying advanced options, mounting and unmounting of volumes, etc.
  • New wizard to guide you through the creating and opening of encrypted folders which makes BoxCryptor even easier to use and avoids some critical problems (e.g. accidentally overwriting the configuration file)
  • Performance improvements: using the BoxCryptor drive should feel a lot faster now (especially for folders with lots of files)

Thanks a lot to all the testers who - with their feedback - have helped us to set up a great new version of BoxCryptor for Windows! You can download BoxCryptor for Windows v1.2 here:
